In This Round…NAB Cup Round 1

Posted in In This Round by Tom Briglia on February 18, 2010

On the Thursday of each week in the lead-up to a St Kilda match, we take a stroll down memory lane and take a look at memorable clash in St Kilda history from the corresponding round.

Collingwood vs St Kilda, NAB Cup Round 1, 2006

Collingwood 2.2.1, 2.3.2, 2.4.4, 2.7.6 (66) ET 2.8.8 (74)
St Kilda 0.1.0, 1.1.2, 1.6.6, 1.8.9 (66) ET 1.9.10 (73)
Crowd: 24,567 at Telstra Dome

In what was a typical 21st Century pre-season match – a rag-tag game played at a boutique stadium – Collingwood got over the line by a solitary point in their first win in any form since July of 2005. But they would need to do it in extra time.

The Magpies started brilliantly with the Cloke brothers guiding them to a 25-point lead by the first change. St Kilda would gradually reel them in, however, and when the third term ended the Saints had the lead; it seemed they would be headstrong and talented enough to win from there.

Goals to Goddard and Harvey meant the Saints held a ten-point lead with five minutes left in the match. After an arm-wrestle of nearly a quarter of football, manic football ensued – goals to Rocca and Fraser snatched the lead for Collingwood, before Stephen Milne hit the post for the Saints from a tight angle with less than a minute remaining. The ball came back into play, and fell to Goddard whose shot missed from outside 50.

St Kilda were able to keep the ball in their attacking area, and in the final seconds of the match Fraser Gehrig was awarded a soft free kick. With the chance to win the match for the Saints after the final siren, his shot faded left and the match was tied.

Two desperate five-minute halves of extra time followed, with Collingwood again edging ahead after a solid St Kilda start. Riewoldt had a brilliant chance to snatch the game again for the Saints, but his left-foot snap from close range barely cleared head-height and was safely touched on the line seconds before the siren.

The jubilant Magpies would be knocked out a week later by a Fremantle team on a mission in 2006. The Saints, meanwhile, would play out the pre-season matches winless, and have to wait until Round 2 to post their first win of any sort in a season in which they would never quite fulfil their potential.

Lol @ “rag-tag game at a boutique stadium”. It was more boutique back with “death valley” or whatever that big sandy patch of the ground was called. And GTrain’s hairstyle was boutique as hell!
